Classic Apps on the Desktop Windows 10

The Windows classic apps open on the Desktop, in the same way as with previous versions of Windows, even though they are opened from the Start menu (or the Taskbar).

Opening a Windows system app

To open a Windows system app:

1. Click on the Start button and navigate through the app list

2. Select the app you want to open

3. The app opens on the Desktop

Hot tip:

If apps have been pinned to the Taskbar, as shown on page 79, they can be opened directly from there by simply clicking on them.

4. Click on the tabs at the top of the app to access relevant Ribbon toolbars and menus

Closing Apps

There are several ways to close a Windows app:

  • Click on the red Close button in the top right of the window

  • Select File > Exit from the File menu (if available)

  • Press Alt+F4

  • Right-click on the icon on the Taskbar and select Close window

  • If any changes have been made to the document, you may receive a warning message advising you to save the associated file

Beware:

It is always worth saving a new document as soon as it is created. It should also be saved at regular intervals as you are working on it.

Viewing All Apps

There is a lot more to Windows 10 than the default Windows 10 apps. Most of the Windows apps that were available with previous versions of Windows are still there, and in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, they are all available directly from the Start button, on the Start menu. To access all of the apps:

1. Click on the Start button

Don't forget:

The alphabetical list of apps in Step 2 replaces the All Apps button that was available in previous versions of Windows 10.

2. All of the apps are displayed. Use the scroll bar to move through all of the apps, which are listed alphabetically

3. Click on a letter heading to view an alphabetic grid for finding apps. Click on a letter to move to that section

Searching for Apps

As you acquire more and more apps, it may become harder to find the ones you want. To help with this, you can use the Search box to search over all of the apps on your computer. To do this:

  • Click in the Search box on the Taskbar

  • Enter a word in the Search box
  • As you type, relevant apps are displayed. When the one you are seeking appears, click on it to start the app

Hot tip:

You just have to put in the first couple of letters of an app and Search will automatically suggest results based on this. The more that you type, the more specific the results become. The case does not matter when you are typing a search.
